A first draft is a prototype. It exists to prove the idea can stand, not to be shipped.
The second pass is refactoring — collapse three paragraphs into one sentence, name things precisely, remove the clever bits that serve the author instead of the reader.
The third pass is performance: rhythm, pacing, where the reader is allowed to breathe.
